The Cities We Serve: Fallbrook
There’s a saying that “No one arrives in Fallbrook by accident.” That’s because this little town in northern San Diego County is located more than six miles away from the nearest major highway (Interstate 15).
If you wind up here, it’s because you wanted to. And a lot of Ma Williams customers have found this gem of a city to be the perfect place for a new manufactured home.
It may be a quiet, isolated town of less than 30,000 people, but Fallbrook’s city leaders have come up with several slogans to announce its presence to the world. They include “Where Agriculture and Culture Meet,” “The Friendly Village,” and “The Avocado Capital of the World.”
Quite a reputation! But if you’ve been there you know such accolades are deserved – especially if you arrived with the thousands who show up ever year for the annual Avocado Festival.
Its first major crop, however, was olives – that was back in the 1920s, about 50 years after the first permanent recorded settlement in the area. One of the original homesteader families named the place after their former homestead in Pennsylvania, and it’s been Fallbrook ever since. Avocados replaced olives as the principal crop after World War II. The city also has a thriving floral industry, and is home to more than 60 wholesale and retail nurseries.
As might be expected in a place that relies so much on agriculture, Fallbrook is more rural than urban, a quality that will certainly appeal to many people looking to flee the big city and retire or raise kids amidst a less hectic environment.
Looking for one more reason to live there? Here it is – if America is ever invaded, Fallbrook will be well-protected thanks to its proximity to Camp Pendleton. There will be no reason to send the Marines because they’re already there!
