The Cities We Serve: Aguanga

There are small towns and then there are really small towns. As of the 2010 census, Aguanga, CA was home to a population of just over 1,000 people. That works out to approximately 80 folks per square mile.

That means there’s plenty of available land here that would welcome a quality manufactured home. Surprisingly, for a dot on the map this undersized we’ve brought many beautiful homes to sites in Aguanga. These clients are homeowners who want to say within driving distance of larger cities such as Temecula and San Diego, but prefer returning to a quiet community free from traffic and congestion headaches.

The name of the city came from a Luiseño village located in the area called “awáanga,” which translates from that Native American language to “dog place.” We trust they didn’t mean that as a criticism. Thankfully, the town is still pet-friendly. Even if you have a cat.

In the 1800s, Aguanga grew from its proximity to the historic Butterfield Overland Mail stage route. A ranch established near the stage station was later used during the Civil War as a post along the marching route of troops to Arizona Territory by the Union Army.

The ruins of the original wooden station building and ranch house still stand in Aguanga, and you’ll see references to stages and the stagecoach in local business names. You can ride on a vintage stagecoach here as well, which makes for a wonderful journey when the Anza-Borrego desert is in full bloom.

Ricardo Breceda’s Gallery, featuring unique metal sculptures, is another popular location attraction.

Mostly, however, Aguanga exists as an antidote to the pressures of big city living.
