The Cities We Serve: Anza

Does small town life sound appealing to you? Welcome to Anza, where the population as of the most recent census was just over 3,000.

This community in southern Riverside County has a colorful and interesting history. The area was named after Juan Bautista de Anza, who first rode through the land in 1774. One of the more modest of the Spanish settlers, he decided to name the area San Carlos, but it was re-christened after Anza in 1926.

There was once a huge inland lake here, but it dried up over the last 500 years, and so the land was used for ranching and mining and producing honey. Some of the descendants of the first ranching generations, who arrive more than 150 years ago, still live there.

As with many smaller communities located within driving distance of Los Angeles and San Diego, Anza has gained popularity with seniors and other California residents seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of big city life. Local officials understand the importance of maintaining this quiet lifestyle and are determined to keep it that way. All proposed development plans are carefully reviewed to make sure they do not disrupt quality of life.

Should you be interested in locating your manufactured home in Anza, you will be welcomed into a community that retains strong ties to its first Native American settlers, the Cahuillan. A thriving local arts presence offers beautiful examples of Cahuillan crafts, and the Mountain Cahuilla operate a casino on the edge of town.

If the cards didn’t fall your way after a visit to the casino, there are numerous free activities to enjoy in Anza, from exploring the Anza Trail to attending horse shows put on by the Lions Club six months out of the year.
