Furnishing your new Manufactured Home

So you’ve just taken delivery of your wonderful new manufactured home – congratulations! Now, what are you going to do with all that empty space?

Sure, you could just transfer the furniture from your previous house, but a new room layout offers possibilities for changing things up, in a way that is both functional and visually appealing.

You could begin a trial-and-error process to find a set-up that looks great, but that means a lot of heavy furniture moving. It’s better to start with a goal in mind and a game plan for getting there. Here are four questions that will help you put that plan in place.

What is the purpose of the room?

Is this the place where the family will gather to watch TV, or is it more of a quiet spot for one person to read or work? How the room will be used will determine which pieces of furniture should go there, and how they should be arranged.

What is the focal point of the room?

Is there one feature around which the rest of the room should be built? With the beauty and quality of today’s manufactured homes that could be a large bay window, or a fireplace. If you have a room with one of these features, select and arrange furnishings that flow toward that point. If no natural focal point exists, create one, perhaps with a large television or a pool table or a painting or art piece that has sentimental value.

How are people going to get around?

Most manufactured floor plans today are open, following the trend of site-built homes. Furniture placement can enhance or obstruct this ease of traffic flow. When you look at an empty room, try to picture how people will move through it to other parts of the house or to the front or back yards, then arrange your furniture in a way that keeps these straight lines open.

What type of furniture will enhance the look of the room?

Everyone has their own decorating taste, and manufactured homes have the space and the flexibility to accommodate a wide range of styles. But what often happens with empty nesters or seniors is the experience of moving into a smaller home and finding out that a four-poster bed or a large sectional sofa may seem too big for the new space. Try to select furniture that fits the scale of the room.
