Manufactured Homes: A Destination of Choice for Retiring Baby Boomers

If you are part of the Baby Boom generation and you are retired, or nearing retirement, you are certainly not alone.

For the next 20 years, an average of 10,000 people each day will reach age 65. While that milestone no longer demands immediate retirement, certainly some of them will be ready to welcome the next phase of their life by taking things easier.

Part of that progression is downsizing from the home where they raised a family to a smaller residence, or moving to an age-restricted community with other seniors. A manufactured home is often part of that process.

Why a Manufactured Home?

Manufactured home communities, more commonly referred to as mobile home communities, have long been popular among seniors for their convenience and their affordability. This has not changed.

What has changed is the quality of these residences, or at least the more impressive perception of them. Today’s manufactured homes are as attractive and comfortable as site-built homes, and offer the same array of features and benefits, but at a much lower price.

Manufactured home communities also provide additional amenities for seniors, from clubs and activities to an increased security presence.

Supply and Demand

Given the significant numbers of baby boomers approaching retirement, the next question is whether there will be enough manufactured homes available to meet what is sure to be increasing demand.

Early indications are encouraging, especially after research by the U.S. Department of Energy discovered that manufactured home construction is more environmentally friendly, and that quality-built manufactured homes can save 55% of energy when compared to a house without energy efficient materials and appliances.

At a time when we are becoming more concerned about saving the planet and reducing carbon emissions, manufactured homes represent an opportunity to expand home construction through green building methods.
