The Cities We Serve: Menifee

Next year, the city of Menifee will officially celebrate its tenth birthday.

Folks have been living in the area long before that, of course. It was originally settled and farmed by the Luiseño people, prior to becoming part of the United States in 1850 following the Mexican-American War.

The town was named for Luther Menifee Wilson, who wasn’t much for farming and tried mining instead. He discovered a sizable quartz lode, which doesn’t get the same publicity as striking gold. Luther had trouble filing the claim and sadly the find didn’t make him rich.

If only he could see the town now. Menifee is a vibrant town in southwest Riverside County that has been recognized as one of Southern California’s top 10 cities for growth. For many years all that was here was a large Sun City retirement community. Today it has become a prime destination for young families looking for a clean and quiet place to live.

Want to check it out? Menifee is located about one hour east of Orange County, 90 minutes southeast of Los Angeles and about 70 minutes north of San Diego. The 215 highway places an abundance of shopping, dining and recreation opportunities within a short drive. One of its most popular attractions is the Motte Historical Museum, which features an incredible classic car collection.

When you visit, don’t be surprised if you see banners honoring members of the United States Armed Forces. Menifee has a long tradition of being home to heroes; Audie Murphy, the most decorated U.S. solider in World War II, had a ranch there.

The City of Menifee Military Banner Program was established in 2012 to honor and recognize hometown active duty member of the United States Armed Forces and Veterans. Banners display the official military photo of the service person, as well as their name and branch of the United States Armed Forces. The City covers the cost of all the bracketing and hardware.
